Academic Testing
At the convention we offer a variety of tests during two testing sessions. Students compete according to grade level or Latin level, depending on the test. The top testers will be acknowledged during the awards ceremony.
The language tests are Hebrew, Greek, Latin comprehension, Latin grammar, and the Decathlon. The culture tests are geography, mottoes, mythology, history, and ancient life.
HEBREW LANGUAGE
The Hebrew language exam has questions of Hebrew language formation, grammar, and comprehension.
GREEK LANGUAGE
The Greek language exam has questions of Greek grammar and comprehension.
LATIN GRAMMAR
Latin grammar exam focuses on the grammar of the Latin language, like syntax, agreement, declensions, and conjugations. There are three Latin grammar tests: Lower, Intermediate, and Upper. Lower corresponds to Latin 1/2 (NLE Introduction to Latin). Intermediate corresponds to Latin 1 (NLE Beginning Latin Exam and Intermediate Latin Exam). Upper corresponds to Latin 2+ (NLE Intermediate Reading Exam and Advanced Exams).
LATIN VOCABULARY
The Latin vocabulary exam tests basic to advanced Latin vocabulary.
DECATHLON
The Decathlon exam is a very challenging exam designed for the advanced students. It has questions from all the other tests (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Life, Mottoes, History, etc.) combined together in one test.
GEOGRAPHY
The geography exam evaluates knowledge of geography throughout the former Roman Empire. Comparisons between modern and ancient cities and states will be made.
MOTTOES
The mottoes exam tests knowledge of common mottoes (e.g. universities, cities, and states), abbreviations, and famous quotations.
MYTHOLOGY
The mythology exam tests knowledge of Greco-Roman mythology.
HISTORY
The history exam tests knowledge of Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian history with an emphasis on the years between the founding and fall of Rome.
ANCIENT LIFE
The ancient life exam tests knowledge of daily life (like clothing, food, and houses) in the ancient world.
LATIN LEVELS
Latin 1/2: This level is for students in grades 5-8 who would take the Exploratory Latin Exam (see the syllabus at www.etclassics.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 1-4, School of Latin: Levels 1-8, Cambridge Latin Course: Stages 1-6, Latin for Children A-C, or Prima Latina/Latina Christiana/First Form Latin, Picta Dicta Latin Primer: Volume I, or similar.
Latin 1: This level is for students in grades 6-12 who would take the NLE Introduction to Latin Exam (see the syllabus at www.nle.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 1-8, Cambridge Latin Course: Unit 1, Latin Alive: Book 1; Second/Third Form Latin; Henle First Year Latin 1: Units 1-5, Picta Dicta Latin Primer: Volume II, or similar.
Latin 2: This level is for students in grades 7-12 who would take the NLE Beginning Latin Exam (consult the syllabus at www.nle.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 9-16, Cambridge Latin Course: Unit 2, Latin Alive: Book 2, Fourth Form Latin, or Henle First Year Latin: Units 6-14.
Latin 3: This level is for students in grades 8-12 who would take the NLE Intermediate Latin Exam (consult the syllabus at www.nle.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 17-24, Cambridge Latin Course: Unit 3, or Henle Second Year Latin: Lessons 1-16.
Latin 4: This level is for students in grades 9-12 who would take the NLE Intermediate Latin Reading Comprehension Exam (consult the syllabus at www.nle.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 25-32; Cambridge Latin Course: Level 4, or Henle Second Year Latin: Lessons 17-32.
Latin 5+: This level is for students in grades 10-12 who would take one of the NLE Advanced Latin Exams (consult the syllabus at www.nle.org) and use texts like Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Chapters 33+, Henle Third and Fourth Year Latin, and/or unadapted Roman authors like Caesar, Vergil, Livy, Ovid, etc.
